Feasibility study of River Management by capital dredging in the Haor Region

Haor is a wetland ecosystem in Bangladesh’s North Eastern part. Inland navigation is the main mode of transport for people and cargoes in haor area. But Inland waterways network in haor is gradually deteriorating mainly due to reduction of stream and cross-boundary flows and silting up of off-takes, thereby decreasing the navigable waterways. To overcome these problems, BIWTA entrusted CEGIS to carry out the feasibility study. The study recommended dredging for smooth plying of boats and cargoes and improve landing stations. The benefits would be in reducing highway traffic congestion, transportation cost, flood vulnerability and improve drainage condition, surface water augmentation for irrigation thereby boosting up agricultural production, enhance tourism and ecosystem goods and services and overall economy as a whole.
