The Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) is an organization for integrated environmental analysis using geographic information systems and remote sensing, as well as information technology and databases. Set up under the aegis of the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and supported by the Government of the Netherlands, it became an independent registered organization after 10 years of working as a project. Thus CEGIS, with its services and products relating to consulting, R&D, spatial analysis, information and database, and training, came into full operation from 1st July, 2002.

The inter-disciplinary activities of CEGIS address sectors such as water resources, agriculture, fisheries, environment, engineering, and transportation and are implemented by staff who specialize in these areas. Natural resources planning, management and monitoring in Bangladesh suffer from a lack of data and information on the conditions of and changes in the extremely dynamic physical and socio-economic environment. CEGIS responds to this need by providing the required set of reliable, accessible and frequently updated information, as it has the technical capacity and the flexibility to do so. It performs this task in two ways, by offering its expertise in collaborative initiatives to support a number of GoB agencies and by taking part in projects in response to specific demands of clients.

CEGIS' mission as a scientifically independent center o f excellence is to support the management of natural resources for sustainable socio-economic development using integrated environmental analysis, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and information technology.
