CEGIS Capability
Staffing and Expertise

The major strength of CEGIS is its multidisciplinary group of highly qualified scientists and technical professionals who bring a wide range of skills to the organization. There are over 50 staff in the organization with expertise in hydrology, water resource management, fisheries, economics, agriculture, sociology, ecology, biology, river morphology, engineering, ground water, soil science, GIS, remote sensing, database and programming.

The senior level professionals who have more than ten years of experience in their respective fields of expertise are supported by a group of young professionals with postgraduate degrees. A highly efficient administration and accounts unit supports the activities with a fully computerized financial and project management system.

Management
The management of CEGIS is headed by the Executive Director appointed by the BoT and two directors. The organogram consists of four programs namely, Environment, GIS - RS, Database/IT and Business Development. Each program is headed by a manager.
Network

CEGIS has collaborative agreements and a working relationship with a number of national agencies including WARPO, BWDB, BARC (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council), BRRI (Bangladesh Rice Research Institute) and DoF. CEGIS also has access to expertise from agencies from abroad including the Netherlands, USA and UK.

WARPO Support
CEGIS has had a very strong collaborative relationship with WARPO since the inception of EGIS (CEGIS’ predecessor).  One of the objectives of the CEGIS Trust is  “to support WARPO in its mandated functions related to strategic planning and the establishment and maintenance of the National Water Resources Database (NWRD)”.  CEGIS has developed NWRD and continues to maintain it. Other projects with WARPO includes “Establishment of Ground Control Point databank for Image georeferencing”, “Updating land type mapping and Digital Elevation Model”, “Development of an Analytical Framework for planning and analysis for IWRM”, “National drought vulnerability and damage assessment”, “Flood monitoring”, and “Erosion monitoring and vulnerability assessment”.
Facilities

CEGIS maintains up-to-date computer hardware and software. It has a unique hardware base consisting of Windows 2000 based servers with more than 100 computers running under Windows 2000 workstations. It also has specialized hardware for GIS and remote sensing including a number of plotters, digitizers, and a range of laser printers.

Human resource development
CEGIS organizes regular training for its staff to maintain its position as a center of excellence. Staff are encouraged to go for higher studies in reputed institutes in Bangladesh and abroad. They are also  encouraged to participate in national and international seminars, workshops and conferences to keep updated on the knowledge and technology world wide.
Research and Development
CEGIS has a strong systematic research and development (R&D) program. The R&D activities aim to develop new analytical tools, investigate new approaches and methodologies to address existing problems, and research applications of new satellite images. The positive outcomes of the research are later implemented in different projects.
